Speakers:

  • The Honorable Susan Illston (U.S. District Judge, U.S. District Court for the Northern District Of California, San Francisco, CA). Judge Illston was nominated by President Bill Clinton and appointed to the court in 1995. Judge Illston was born in Tokyo. She received her B.A. at Duke University in 1970 and her J.D. at Stanford in 1973. Before joining the bench, she was a partner in the law firm of Cotchett, Illston & Pitre, in Burlingame, CA, specializing in civil litigation practice with emphasis on commercial litigation. Her experience as a judge includes handling many major antitrust cases in the US. In one of the most notable, Judge Illston handled litigation proceedings relating to the price fixing of liquid crystal displays (LCDs).  She presided over both criminal and civil trials related to LCDs, imposing the largest criminal fine against a Taiwan company found guilty after trial (US$500,000,000) and  authorizing class-action lawsuits that led to settlements of over US$ one billion.
