On Wednesday, February 15, 2017, we held a ‘Political Morning’ event together with medianet berlinbrandenburg, a membership organization for the media industry in the Berlin region, and Sahra Wagenknecht, deputy chairperson of the German DIE LINKE political party. We asked for her thoughts on digitization, automation and robotization, and she explained the effects she expects them to have on society, the labor market and the creative industries in Germany. At a time where ‘fake news’ and ‘hate messages’ pervade social media, she endorsed public service broadcasting, but said that it needed to focus on its core mission more. Ms. Wagenknecht rejects the idea of a state authority to combat fake news, as it might fall into the wrong hands in the event of a change in government. She believes the state should offer alternatives that are focused on the common good in the network industries and for search engines. These topics led to an interesting, and unsurprisingly controversial discussion.
