The Food & Ag Startup Legal Bootcamp provided interactive sessions designed for startups, entrepreneurs, and others with an interest in the food and agriculture sectors. These sessions equipped participants with the legal knowledge necessary to develop their businesses, safeguard their innovations, and effectively manage legal complexities.
Top lawyers from MoFo’s globally recognized Food & Agriculture industry team led each session with a real-world, experience-based approach and provided insights on key legal issues across the sector.
The courses began on Wednesday, April 2, 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. PT, and ran every Wednesday through April 30, 2025.
Session 1: Formation and Financing | April 2, 2025
This session offered insights on how to launch and grow startups while avoiding common legal pitfalls that could negatively impact future fundraising. Speakers included Alfredo Silva and Janine Elliott (UC Davis Venture Catalyst).
Session 2: IP Procurement + Enforcement | April 9, 2025
This session included an introduction to food and ag IP law, including patentability, FTO, and IP diligence, as well as a discussion of recent trends in food & ag patent litigation. Speakers included Anita Choi and Matthew Chivvis.
Session 3: Advertising, Labeling, and Litigation | April 16, 2025
This session guided participants through current food labeling and marketing laws and explained how to prevent food safety liability when launching food and ag innovations in this highly complex industry. Speakers included Claudia Vetesi and Lena Gankin.
Session 4: – Commercial Contracts and IP Licensing | April 23, 2025
This session offered insights into structuring and negotiating commercial and licensing agreements in the food and ag sector, helping startups secure strategic partnerships and drive customer growth while protecting their interests. Speaker was Matthew Ferry.
Session 5: – State of the Market and Future Opportunities | April 30, 2025
This session examined the current state of the food and ag market, the key trends shaping the industry, and what businesses should anticipate—along with a forward-looking discussion on the industry’s future. Speakers included Mitchell Presser, Tom Brennan (McKinsey), and Michael Lavin (Germin8 Ventures).
