Companies and their lawyers brace for wide-ranging EU data-privacy law

Morrison & Foerster partner Lokke Moerel advises companies to be prepared for the cost that comes with GDPR compliance in the ABA Journal article “Companies and their lawyers brace for wide-ranging EU data-privacy law.”

For example, businesses must create a register of their data-processing activities, but this step alone “takes much more time than they anticipated” and is not feasible for many, she said.

As far as what to expect from authorities, Ms. Moerel said that regulators could take various directions, but businesses should expect them to act forcefully. “The data-protection authorities will need to make a statement,” she said.
