Mergermarket Honors Morrison & Foerster at 2018 Japan M&A Awards

27 Jun 2018

On June 21 in Tokyo, Mergermarket recognized Morrison & Foerster with three awards during its inaugural 2018 Japan M&A Awards, which recognize senior dealmakers and in-house legal teams for their “creative advisory” work on high-profile complex transactions.

Morrison & Foerster was recognized as:

  • International M&A Legal Adviser of the Year
  • Outbound M&A Legal Adviser of the Year
  • Technology, Media & Telecom M&A Legal Adviser of the Year

In 2017, the firm worked on some of Japan’s most complex and challenging M&A transactions, including:

  • Representing Toshiba in the $18 billion sale of its wholly owned subsidiary Toshiba Memory Corporation to a consortium led by Bain Capital, the largest Japanese inbound M&A deal since 2011, as well as both the largest private equity and leveraged finance deal ever in Asia.
  • Representing SoftBank in its $7.7 billion primary and secondary investment as part of a $9.3 billion sale of stock by Uber, the largest-ever private secondary transaction in the technology space.
  • Advising the SoftBank Group and SoftBank Vision Fund in their $4.4 billion investment in WeWork Companies, a platform for creators and provider of an extensive network of shared workspaces.
  • Representing SoftBank in its $5 billion investment in Xiaoju Kuaizhi Inc. (Didi), China’s leading ride-hailing and mobile transportation platform.

Winners were selected by an expert panel of judges after extensive analysis of Mergermarket’s league tables.

In 2017 and Q1 2018, the firm received top rankings in Mergermarket’s global M&A league table, including #1 by deal volume among all law firms in Japan.
