03 Jul 2018

Global Investigations Review (GIR) named New York partners Carrie Cohen and Ruti Smithline and Washington, D.C., partner Demme Doufekias to its prestigious list of top 2018 Women in Investigations, which recognizes 100 female practitioners from around the globe “whose reputations and resumes speak for themselves.”

In a special edition featuring the winners, Carrie Cohen discusses her most rewarding experience and her dedication to advancing women in the legal profession and shares the best piece of career advice she ever received.

Carrie has a distinguished record of success in the courtroom, where she has handled high-stakes litigation with a particular focus on white-collar and securities cases. She has significant experience handling internal and government investigations. Carrie is also co-chair of the firm’s Women’s Strategy Committee.

A former Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York, she has tried more than ten cases to verdict and has argued numerous appeals before the Second Circuit. This includes serving as the lead prosecutor in United States v. Sheldon Silver, a case in which she secured the headline-making conviction of the long-time Speaker of the New York State Assembly on corruption and money-laundering charges.

In her profile, Demme Doufekias discusses her path to investigations, the importance of mentorship, and traits that lend themselves to being a successful investigator.

Co-chair of the firm’s Securities Litigation, Enforcement, and White-Collar Criminal Defense Practice Group, Demme has significant experience advising clients on sensitive cross-border investigations and anti-corruption due diligence matters, and creating global anti-corruption compliance programs.

She is a highly regarded advisor of Fortune 500 pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies in FCPA, federal health care, and false claims act investigations involving various U.S. enforcement agencies, and is currently leading a multinational pharmaceutical company’s internal investigation of a broad range of allegations involving its operations in a European country.

Ruti Smithline, in her GIR profile, discusses the ways that technology and data privacy have changed her practice, how being a native Spanish speaker has positively impacted her career, and why she’s decided to build her career at Morrison & Foerster.

Ruti regularly advises clients involved in acquisitions, joint ventures, and private equity transactions on cross-border investigations, global compliance programs, and anti-corruption due diligence.

She has particular experience throughout Latin America and has been instrumental in expanding the firm’s presence in the region. As a result, our team is currently overseeing some of the highest-profile corruption cases throughout Latin America.
