Morrison & Foerster’s firmwide managing partner Tessa Schwartz has been honored with a 2018 National Women in Law Award by Corporate Counsel and Inside Counsel magazines. Tessa was recognized in the Innovative Leadership category.
“These women stand out because they are business strategists, complex problem-solvers, and of course, great lawyers,” Corporate Counsel explains. “And as important (especially to them) is that they are great people-leaders — they care more about the success of the team than their individual success.”
As firmwide managing partner, Tessa has focused on positioning the firm to succeed in an increasingly demanding legal market, and at the same time promote the inclusion of qualified women attorneys and lawyers of color in leadership and client-facing positions. She thinks those two goals are aligned: “Sure, most clients have policies that require their outside counsel to assign a minimum percentage of billable work to attorneys who qualify as ‘diverse,’ but it’s not enough. Offline our clients tell us they want diverse attorneys leading the teams. And that’s great for us because we have a deep bench of amazingly talented attorneys who exceed our clients’ expectations.”
