How ‘Free’ Wi-Fi Hotspots Can Track Your Location Even When You Aren't Connected

Individual, profile-based location tracking via WiFi hotspots is restricted in the European Union under the GDPR, and violators are subject to heavy penalties according to Morrison & Foerster’s Alja Poler De Zwart in the PCWorld article “How ‘free’ Wi-Fi hotspots can track your location even when you aren't connected.

“Exact location is considered as very sensitive information across Europe. Companies tracking user location need to, among others, provide easily understandable notice and obtain explicit user consent,” she said. “Companies who do not abide by these rules risk regulatory enforcement action, including the GDPR-style fines.”
