Craig Fields, Arturo González, and Karen Kubin Named to Law360’s MVP List for 2018

On November 25, Law360 released its 2018 list of MVPs, and among them were MoFo New York partner Craig Fields, San Francisco partner Arturo González, and San Francisco senior counsel Karen Kubin. Each year, Law360’s MVP list honors an elite selection of lawyers for their roles in high-stakes litigation, record-breaking deals, and innovative solutions to complex global matters.

Craig Fields is co-chair of the firm’s Tax Department and chair of the State and Local Tax (SALT) Group. Under his tenure, MoFo’s SALT practice has led the way in shaping the field, playing a critical role in many of the most important cases affecting state and local taxation, including cases heard by the U.S. Supreme Court and many state supreme courts. Mr. Fields’ work has resulted in successful outcomes for many of the world’s leading companies, including decisions this past year from the Virginia Supreme Court for Kohl’s Department Stores and the Colorado Court of Appeals for Agilent Technologies.

Chair of MoFo’s Commercial Litigation and Trial Practice Group, Arturo González, has taken the lead on some of the most headline-grabbing cases this past year, such as Waymo LLC v. Uber Technologies, Inc., where he defeated a motion for preliminary injunction and obtained a very favorable settlement for Uber after four days of jury trial. He is one of the first trial lawyers of his generation to successfully defend companies in four $1 billion lawsuits while securing four plaintiffs’ jury verdicts in excess of $10 million each.

Senior counsel Karen Kubin’s work on historically significant matters, such as Brinker Restaurant Corporation v. Superior Court—a watershed case that settled the question of whether California employers are required to simply provide breaks for their workers or to ensure the breaks are taken—has shaped the direction of California employment law. In the last year alone, Ms. Kubin has won nearly one major victory a month for major national retailers and retail grocery companies.
