Morrison & Foerster announced today that the firm received two deal awards and one individual award at ALM’s 2019 Asia Legal Awards. The winners were revealed during a gala dinner held on March 21, 2019, at the Renaissance Harbour View in Hong Kong.
The firm won Private Equity Deal of the Year for its work with Alibaba Group on the US$14 billion Series C financing for Ant Financial, with a valuation of approximately US$150 billion. Morrison & Foerster also received M&A Deal of the Year: Southeast Asia for its involvement in advising SoftBank, the largest shareholder in Grab and Uber, in Grab’s acquisition of Uber’s Southeast Asia operations.
Asia Managing Partner Eric Piesner noted that “this recognition is a great indication of the success the firm has had in expanding our M&A and private equity practices in Asia. With over 110 corporate lawyers covering Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo, we are more prepared than ever to take on deals of this caliber.”
In addition, Marcia Ellis was awarded M&A Lawyer of the Year for demonstrating a market-leading position and her commitment to excellent client service. Over the last 12 months, Ms. Ellis has advised on a number of complex deals, the aggregate value of which is over US$75 billion.
“It’s truly an honor to be recognized for having worked on some of the most important and far-reaching transactions in the Asian market,” says Marcia. “All credit should go to our tremendous M&A team. These awards are further evidence that Morrison & Foerster has made a name for itself in the market, and they set the tone for what’s to come over the next year.”
