Lawyers Call for Optimism Despite Fresh ePrivacy Delays

Alex van der Wolk spoke to Global Data Review about delays in the EU’s ePrivacy Regulation, saying he remains hopeful about a resolution.

“In the past half year, in the council there seems to be a higher sense of urgency,” he said. “When Croatia takes over the presidency [on January 1], they could theoretically de-prioritise it, it is possible. But I’m optimistic.”

Alex also argued that legislators’ priority should be getting the law through. “There was a huge amount of momentum when GDPR passed, a lot of investment to bring companies up to speed. All these very good intentions were met with uncertainty – which version of the ePrivacy Directive do we take into account? From a practical perspective, one of the downsides of this dragging on is the uncertainty.”
