John Smith spoke to Energy Intelligence about U.S. President Donald Trump’s authority to sanction Iraq if it expels U.S. troops in an “unfriendly” manner.
“Sanctions against Iraq seem somewhat unthinkable in this environment where Iraq has been a long-time ally and we have been in the country working with that government for an extensive period of time,” John said. “That said, the president has extraordinarily broad authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to declare a national emergency and impose sanctions.”
