Morrison & Foerster advised Santen Pharmaceutical Co., a specialized company dedicated to ophthalmology, in its newly formed joint venture with Verily that is focused on applying microelectronics and scalable digital technologies to ophthalmology. The companies formally announced their partnership on February 4, 2020.
Verily is a subsidiary of Alphabet that is focused on life sciences and healthcare. The new joint venture between Santen and Verily is driven by a mission to improve eye health for people everywhere, starting by developing solutions to support modern ophthalmology practices globally. The joint venture will combine Verily's cutting-edge digital technology with Santen’s global industrial and commercial ophthalmology business platform to pursue innovation in the space.
The MoFo team was led by San Francisco partner Jackie Liu, who co-leads the Corporate Department, and Tokyo partner Masato Hayakawa, and included San Francisco associate Can Cui, as well as Tokyo partner Rony Gerrits, who co-heads the Antitrust Group.
