House Members Eye Path Forward for Federal Privacy Law
Alex Iftimie spoke to Law360 about the House Commerce Committee’s subcommittee on consumer protection and commerce gathering feedback on the American Data Privacy and Protection Act, a bicameral and bipartisan discussion draft of a national privacy framework that is the strongest chance yet to enact federal privacy legislation.
“There was broad consensus that this bill is a step in the right direction and that the tweaks will really be on the margins,” said Alex, who noted that he was struck by how both the subcommittee members and witnesses stayed largely on topic and were able to find common ground on the need to establish uniform privacy rules and what provisions should be included in such a framework.
He added: “The fact that we’ve got a hearing before Congress on a concrete privacy bill that has significant bipartisan support is uncharted territory for the U.S. …It’s a really positive signal regarding the future prospect of having a national privacy standard in the U.S. as opposed to a patchwork of state laws.”
