M & A Advisor Lauds MoFo with Three Deal of the Year Awards

19 Oct 2011
The M&A Advisor named ON Semiconductor’s acquisition of Sanyo Semiconductor the winning deal in three categories at its 2011 International M&A Summit & Awards Gala. The deal was named overall M&A Deal of the Year ($500 million to $1 billion), Corporate/Strategic Acquisition of the Year ($500 million to $1 billion), and Information Technology Deal of the Year.

A MoFo team led by partners Eric McCrath (San Francisco) and Randy Laxer (Tokyo) served as lead coordinating counsel to ON Semiconductor in the $600 million deal, which is the first-ever acquisition of a major Japanese technology company by a U.S. company, and is also one of the largest inbound investments into Japan to date. In addition to Mr. McCrath and Mr. Laxer, the MoFo team included Tokyo partners Jay Ponazecki and Masato Hayakawa, Of Counsels Rika Saeki (Tokyo) and Jeff Washenko (Palo Alto), Tokyo associates Yoshinobu Mizutani, CJ Hoppel, Justin Jamail, Yosuke Yamamoto, Kana Matsumura, Haruka Okihara, and Yuichi Inase, and San Francisco associate Taylor Davis.

The award is the latest in a long list of accolades recognizing our reputation as a global leader on major cross-border M&A transactions. Our representation of ON Semiconductor came hot on the heels of our advice to Intel on its $1.4 billion acquisition of Infineon’s Wireless Solutions business – another of the most significant cross-border tech deals of the past year – and was followed up by our representation of Terumo Corporation in its $2.6 billion acquisition of U.S. medical device company CaridianBCT, which is the largest-ever acquisition by a Japanese company in the medical device sector.

The International M&A Summit & Awards Gala honored deal teams, dealmakers, and firms whose activities set the standard for the industry. This year, 28 winners were chosen from 230 finalists. An independent body of experts, representing the international M&A industry, judged the finalists’ deals, dealmakers and firms.

Founded in 1998, The M&A Advisor has established itself as a premier membership network of M&A, turnaround and finance professionals, facilitating connections between and recognizing achievement in the industry’s top performers throughout the United States and international markets.
