Morrison & Foerster Ranks Seventh in 2016 FT North America Innovative Lawyers Report

07 Dec 2016

In the 2016 edition of the FT North America Innovative Lawyers Report, Morrison & Foerster ranked #7 on the FT 25, a list of the firms that have most successfully responded to client needs through innovation. At an awards ceremony held in New York City on December 5, three New York partners were honored for their innovative legal work.

Innovation in Social Responsibility

In the Social Responsibility: Projects category, FT named Morrison & Foerster and NPX Advisors the overall joint winners.

FT commended capital markets partner Anna Pinedo for her role in envisioning and structuring the world’s first “impact security” aimed at improving the transparency of funding for organizations where the return includes a measure of social impact achieved. The new financial instrument brings standard for-profit capital markets concepts to the nonprofit world and allows a greater pool of investors to participate in the social impact finance market.

Great Legal Ideas

In the Great Legal Ideas category, James Tanenbaum, chair of the firm’s Global Capital Markets Practice, was commended for his leadership on Icelandic Bank Landsbanki’s restructuring. During the final stages of the restructuring, Tanenbaum and his team employed a little used Securities Act exception to issue securities to the bank’s creditors as settlement of their claims.

New Products

In the New Products category, Pinedo was commended in connection with the development of a novel receipt that represents an interest in gold bullion for Bank of Montreal.

Enabling Clients to Innovate

Another standout was Miriam Wugmeister, co-chair of the firm’s Global Privacy & Data Security Practice. Wugmeister is leading the team that is helping Caterpillar become a digital business through policy, procedure, and regulatory reviews, and through a reevaluation of its strategies to engage customers and deliver connected products. For this work, Morrison & Foerster was a finalist in the Enabling Clients to Innovate category. In addition, Caterpillar was shortlisted for Driving Transformation in Business and Technology.

For her work helping Caterpillar and other clients with their digital transformations, FT honored Wugmeister as one of this year’s 10 most innovative lawyers in North America.
