The National Law Journal has named Morrison & Foerster partner J. Alexander Lawrence to its annual Pro Bono Hot List for his efforts to ensure that women in Texas continue to have access to abortion services.
Mr. Lawrence led a MoFo team that, along with the Center for Reproductive Rights, challenged the constitutionality of a Texas law that placed restrictions on abortion clinic operations. At issue were two provisions that required clinics to meet the same regulations as ambulatory surgical centers and that required doctors who perform abortions at these clinics to have admission privileges at nearby hospitals. The team won several key injunctions from a Texas district court that were reinstated by the U.S. Supreme Court after the Fifth Circuit had granted a stay to the state of Texas.
“We could not have achieved success in this case of great importance without the amazing efforts of Alex and his team,” Stephanie Toti, a senior counsel at the Center for Reproductive Rights, told The National Law Journal, citing Alex’s strategic advice and “great wealth of litigation experience.”
The Pro Bono Hot List annually recognizes exemplary efforts of individuals, groups, and firms to advance access to justice.
