Russia’s attack on the 2016 presidential election continues to command headlines but it’s only the latest incident of the U.S. being targeted by global adversaries in cyberspace, writes John Carlin, chair of Morrison & Foerster’s Global Risk + Crisis Management Group and co-chair of the firm’s National Security Practice, in his new book, Dawn of the Code War. Mr. Carlin’s co-author is Garrett Graff, an award-winning national security journalist, and the publisher of the book is PublicAffairs, an imprint of Hachette Book Group.

In the book, Mr. Carlin, who previously served as Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice’s National Security Division and Chief of Staff to then-FBI Director Robert Mueller, explains that as each year passes Internet-linked attacks on U.S. interests continue to grow in both frequency and severity. As industries from banking to manufacturing to transportation move into the global digital economy, Mr. Carlin says the U.S. becomes increasingly vulnerable to international adversaries in cyberspace.

Mr. Carlin provides a firsthand account of the global but little understood cybersecurity war, as well as a warning of the dangers to come—and how the U.S. is preparing to fight back.
