Law360 Honors MoFo MandA

In its annual ranking of the top law firm practices, Law360 recognized Morrison & Foerster’s M&A team as one of five Practice Groups of the Year. This is the third time in the last five years that MoFo’s M&A team has earned this distinction.

In addition to honoring the firm at the practice level, Law360 selected M&A co-chair Robert Townsend as a 2016 M&A MVP. This is the second time that Mr. Townsend has earned this honor.

Global M&A Powerhouse

Law360According to Law360, the firm “staked a claim among M&A practices” with its work on some of the biggest deals of 2016, including representing SoftBank in its $31.4 billion acquisition of ARM, the largest outbound acquisition from Japan and the largest-ever cash investment from Asia into the UK.

In addition to the magnitude of the practice’s work in 2016, Law360 highlighted the group’s sizable deal volume, with the team advising on 165 deals with a combined value of $294 billion.

Nearly 50 percent of the transactions were cross-border — a key focus of the global group.

“Our practice is a truly global practice,” says New York partner and practice co-chair Spencer Klein. “We don’t have a center of gravity in New York with offices elsewhere. We are a preeminent firm in the Bay Area and Japan. We have a very sizable leadership in China as well as in Singapore, and in Europe we have strong M&A practices in London and Berlin.”

Drawing on resources across the firm’s global network, the M&A team advised on some of the most significant transactions of the year, including:

“MoFo maintains a stronghold in the technology, life sciences, consumer products and retail and energy sectors,” Law360 concludes, with the firm having advised on 58 tech deals, 29 life sciences deals, 23 consumer or retail deals, and 15 energy deals.

M&A MVP

M&A partner and practice co-chair Robert Townsend was also recognized by Law360, earning a spot as one of only five “M&A MVPs” for 2016.

Mr. Townsend has “built a career steering complex transactions,” writes Law360, and 2016 was no exception.

“I love the fact that no two M&A are the same and each has its own unique complexities and challenges, including understanding the motivations and aspirations of the parties and finding a structure that achieves their goals, complies with applicable law and withstands scrutiny from regulators,” said Mr. Townsend.
