Morrison Foerster is proud to sponsor this year’s Golden State Antitrust and UCL Institute conference on May 5, in San Francisco, California. San Francisco Partner Bonnie Lau will speak on a highly anticipated panel, “Big Stakes Antitrust Trial: In re Capacitors Antitrust Litigation (N.D. Cal.),” regarding an antitrust price-fixing cartel class action, which was tried twice—before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, in the Northern District of California. Bonnie and other lead trial counsel will discuss their trial preparation and strategy, favorite trial moments, how they pivoted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and present their never‑before-seen closing statements.
Less than three days into the second Capacitors federal class action antitrust jury trial, MoFo reached a settlement agreement on behalf of our client Matsuo Electric Co., Ltd. (“Matsuo”) with the class of direct purchasers of capacitors. Matsuo settled with the class for $5 million dollars—an extraordinary outcome for our client, which faced $1.3 billion in treble damages exposure at trial. The direct purchasers timed the early settlement to avoid MoFo cross‑examining the class’s expert damages witness. The MoFo team representing Matsuo included: Litigation Partners Bonnie Lau, David Cross, and Mary Kaiser; Associates Margaret Webb and Brittany Ngo; Senior Paralegal Jenna Conaway; and Legal Secretary Dara Pilgrim.
