Caressa Tsai is an associate in Morrison Foerster’s San Francisco office and a member of the firm’s Patent Strategy + Prosecution Group.Caressa’s practice focuses on life sciences and biotechnology patent drafting and prosecution.Before joining Morrison Foerster as an associate, Caressa was a summer associate and law clerk at the firm in the Two-Summer Patent Program.Caressa received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where she was a publishing editor of the California Law Review and a senior life sciences editor for the Berkeley Technology Law Journal. She received Jurisprudence Awards for Life Sciences and Innovation Workshops I and II, the Prosser Prize for Intellectual Property Law, and the Law and Technology Certificate.Prior to law school, Caressa received her Ph.D. in biochemistry and biomedical sciences from McMaster University. Her Ph.D. research focused on exploiting host immune pathways for anti-infective drug discovery in Salmonella. She graduated with an H.B.Sc. with high distinction in biology from the University of Toronto, where her research focused on bioinformatic approaches to detect signatures of selection in intrinsically disordered proteins. Caressa has experience in research and matters relating to bacterial genomics, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, infectious diseases, immunology, and computational biology.

Josh Crawford’s practice focuses on domestic patent prosecution, international patent portfolio management, patent infringement and validity determinations, and IP litigation support. Josh has experience drafting and prosecuting patents in numerous technology areas, including AI, machine learning, network and data security, cloud computing, computer vision, medical devices, optics and lasers, laboratory and assay equipment, microfluidics, bioinformatics, user interfaces, and consumer electronics. In addition to patent prosecution, Josh’s practice includes preparing petitions and responses in inter partes review proceedings, as well as preparing invalidity and non-infringement positions in district court litigations. In adversarial proceedings, Josh has worked on matters concerning network security systems, GPS technology, medical devices, and integrated circuit technologies. Josh received his J.D. with highest honors from the George Washington University Law School, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and received the Presidential Merit Scholarship and Bobby Burchfield Scholarship. During law school, he worked at Morrison Foerster as a summer associate and as a law clerk. Before law school, Josh received his B.S. with high honors in physics from the University of Maryland. During his undergraduate studies, he worked with the Joint Quantum Institute performing optics research in cavity quantum electrodynamics. Josh is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia and Virginia and is registered to practice before the USPTO.

As chair of the biotechnology group and a member of the firm’s food and agriculture steering committee, Dr. Meghan Poon counsels clients on patent preparation and prosecution, portfolio strategy, and IP due diligence in the areas of life science and agriculture. Meghan is passionate about working with cutting edge technologies at the frontier or science that impacts human health and global food security. She has significant experience in diverse technologies including antibodies, cell and gene therapies, diagnostics, and gene edited plants. Meghan manages a cross-technology team to service clients developing technology at the interface of life science and AI.Meghan represents clients ranging from large international pharmaceutical companies to midsized companies, startups, and universities. She has filed numerous Patent Term Extension applications to secure additional term for her clients’ patents which cover FDA approved products. In addition, Meghan has extensive experience addressing complex obviousness-double patenting and subject matter eligibility issues impacting her clients’ patent portfolios. Meghan also represents clients in both investor side and target side due diligence in deals from seed funding to initial public offerings.Meghan is a thought leader on intellectual property issues facing pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agriculture companies and is sought after to speak at events and publish on these issues. Meghan has written numerous articles on the topics of patents vs. trade secrets, subject matter edibility, written description and enablement in life sciences. Meghan is editor of the MoFo Life Sciences Blog, where she directs content.Prior to law school, Meghan earned her PhD in biological chemistry based at the University of California, Los Angeles. Meghan’s Ph.D. work focused on analysis of protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions of site-specific recombinases. Meghan is the author of several scientific publications and has presented her research at international conferences.Meghan received her J.D. from the University of Southern California Law School and spent a year as a visiting student at Santa Clara University, where she focused on intellectual property.
