Morrison Foerster will close all U.S. offices in observance of Juneteenth on Monday, June 20. As we celebrate Juneteenth, we also reflect on the unfinished work of securing racial justice.
This year, we are proud to celebrate with a $20,000 donation from The Morrison & Foerster Foundation in support of these two organizations:
- The John Paul Stevens Fellowship Foundation for the continued expansion of its summer public interest legal fellowship program to HBCU law schools. This will provide financial support to more students at historically Black law schools who wish to participate in unpaid public interest summer law positions at nonprofits and government agencies.
- The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund’s Marshall-Motley Scholars Program. Now in its second year, this program’s five-year goal is to invest in the establishment of a corps of 50 civil rights attorneys equipped and prepared to advocate on behalf of Black communities in the South seeking racial justice and equity.
Attorneys and staff are encouraged to find and attend a local celebration or event in their community and consider these virtual events as well:
- Juneteenth Summit 2022: The 13th Annual Juneteenth NYC Festival will host a virtual celebration on Friday, June 17, including health and wellness panels and cultural celebrations.
- The National Museum of African American History and Culture offers a number of virtual events highlighting the experiences of African American Juneteenth celebrations.
- Step Afrika! is a professional dance company that blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, traditional African dances, and various other contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive storytelling experience. Their 19 Days Celebrating Juneteenth from June 15 through July 4 will include daily unique works honoring the determination, resilience, and reclamation of freedom that underlie this holiday.
