James Brower spoke to Global Competition Review about a bipartisan group of lawmakers introducing legislation that would give the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States jurisdiction over all land purchases by entities linked to adversaries and establish a presumption that certain deals would harm national security.
According to James, national security reviews and probes related to foreign investments have been the purview of the federal government, so it is no surprise that congressmen are seeking additional jurisdiction.
“But this bill highlights the consistent and growing bipartisan effort to further regulate foreign investments in the United States,” James added. “The timing seems quite connected to state action, which suggests the federal government is seeking to maintain its primacy in this area.”
