MoFo Advises Tokyo Gas on Strategic LNG Infrastructure Investment in Indonesia
MoFo advised Tokyo Gas Asia Pte. Ltd. (Tokyo Gas), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., on its acquisition of 100% of PT AGP Indonesia Utama (AGPIU), and participation in the development of a major Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure project in Indonesia.
The project, being developed in collaboration with PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), a subsidiary of Indonesia’s state-owned electricity utility PLN, and Indonesian shipping company PT Suasa Benua Sukses (SBS), will establish an integrated LNG supply and distribution network serving six locations across Sulawesi and the Maluku Islands.
The development will comprise of floating and onshore LNG infrastructure and a small-scale LNG carrier connecting multiple power generation facilities. It is designed to facilitate the transition from diesel fuel to domestically sourced natural gas, supporting Indonesia’s energy security objectives while reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions.
The investment represents an important step in Tokyo Gas’s expansion of its LNG infrastructure business in Southeast Asia and reflects growing demand for innovative LNG-to-power solutions across the region’s island economies.
MoFo has a longstanding relationship with Tokyo Gas, including advising on its investment in the First Gen LNG import and regasification terminal in the Philippines. This latest engagement further underscores the firm’s experience advising on complex, cross-border LNG infrastructure and power projects throughout Asia.
The MoFo team advising Tokyo Gas was led by Per Lindberg, Co-chair of the firm’s Energy Group, with support from Singapore-based associates Tina Teo and Lyna Luo, Tokyo-based partner Michael Graffagna, and Tokyo-based of counsel Ganesh Vaheisvaran.
