Morrison Foerster, the family of the late MoFo partner Melvin R. Goldman, and the Northern District of California Historical Society recognized Joe Cotchett, a founder of Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy LLP, on Thursday, May 17, 2025 in MoFo’s San Francisco office.
Ragesh Tangri opened the event and introduced Joe Cotchett, and Jack Londen gave a heartfelt tribute to Mel Goldman and his work. Mel’s wife, children, and grandchildren were there in support of this tribute award. More than ten current California judges were also there to celebrate Joe’s work and Mel’s life.
Joe spoke to a lively, congenial crowd, beginning with, “This award is not about Joe Cotchett, because there is no individual without the unit behind him or her.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom sent Joe a letter that was read by Ragesh: “Established this year by the Northern District Historical Society, the Goldman Tribute Award recognizes an attorney who embodies the highest ideals of the legal profession, and there is no one more deserving of this distinguished honor than Joe. A close confidante of my father, Joe was a dear family friend to my family. Joe served in the military alongside my father, and since then I have witnessed firsthand the work he has done to establish himself as a top trial lawyer in the nation. From defending workers and consumers in high-profile cases to offering pro bono services to underrepresented communities, Joe has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to defending and upholding justice.”
