Gary advises clients on restructuring and insolvency matters in the United States, United Kingdom, continental Europe, and Asia.Gary represents debtors and creditors in domestic and cross-border restructuring and liquidation proceedings. He has represented an ad hoc group of holders of “Constitutional Debt” issued or guaranteed by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and has acted as lead counsel to Residential Capital and its subsidiaries in their chapter 11 cases. He has been heavily involved in the implementation of foreign liquidations and schemes of arrangement in the United States and closely involved with issues arising under chapter 15 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Notably, Gary represented two of the largest Icelandic banks in their restructuring proceedings in Iceland. He has also acted as counsel to the acquirer — in and out of chapter 11 — in several major international asset purchases of mining, smelting, and oil and gas operations.He is a fellow of the American Bar Association and former co-chair of the Transnational Bankruptcy Committee of the International Insolvency Institute. Additionally, Gary is a former member of the City Bar’s Insurance Law Committee and former co-chair of its Insolvency Committee.Gary is listed as a leading lawyer for Bankruptcy & Restructuring in Chambers Global and Chambers USA, where he is described as “an outstanding strategic thinker and a great presenter in court.”

Doug is a partner in the Business Restructuring + Insolvency Group, based in the New York office.Doug’s practice focuses on representing clients in chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, out-of-court restructurings, and other distressed situations. His clients include official creditors’ committees, ad hoc creditor groups, and individual asset managers, as well as corporate borrowers.On behalf of creditors, Doug implements strategies focused on maximizing creditor recoveries and he has significant experience proposing and confirming plans of reorganization; investigating and prosecuting various estate causes of action; negotiating intercreditor disputes; crafting cash collateral orders, debtor-in-possession/exit financing packages, and creditor-sponsored equity rights offerings; challenging confirmation of nonconsensual chapter 11 plans; terminating exclusivity; participating in 363 sales; and implementing and defending against coercive liability management transactions. On the company side, Doug counsels borrowers navigating the complex legal, financial, and operational issues that arise in distressed situations, implementing both in- and out-of-court restructurings aimed at preserving value.Doug has been recognized for over a decade in Chambers USA, where he is acclaimed as a “force of nature” and an “adept architect of the restructuring process.”  Turnarounds & Workouts recognized him as an Outstanding Restructuring Lawyer in 2020 and 2017 and he is recognized as a Leading Global Restructuring Lawyer by Lawdragon 500.Doug has a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School and a B.A. in government and law from Lafayette College.

Jennifer Marines serves as global vice chair of Morrison Foerster, co-chair of the firm’s global Business Restructuring + Insolvency Group, a member of the Woman’s Strategy Committee, and a member of the Firm’s Finance and Benefits Committee. She has extensive experience in representing chapter 11 debtors, creditors, investors, and other parties in interest in all aspects of complex corporate restructurings, including chapter 11 cases, out-of-court restructurings, and distressed acquisitions.Jennifer has built a highly successful and peer-recognized practice in the restructuring and work-outs space, routinely representing companies and their boards in navigating complex distressed situations. Jennifer also has extensive experience advising official committees of creditors, negotiating and structuring financings and other commercial transactions, and representing clients seeking to purchase businesses and related assets out of chapter 11 proceedings. Jennifer is recognized by Chambers USA and The Legal 500 US in the area of corporate restructuring. She has recently been recognized as one of “Top Women in Dealmaking” by The Deal and a “Top Woman Dealmaker” by Global M&A Network. She has also been named an “Outstanding Young Restructuring Lawyer” for 2016–2020 by Turnarounds & Workouts and a “Bankruptcy Rising Star” for 2016 and 2017 by Law360.
