Morrison Foerster’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group has been recognized in the Daily Journal’s 2025 Top Defense Verdicts report for securing a complete summary judgment victory for Palo Alto Networks in a long-standing patent dispute.Led by partners Timothy Chen Saulsbury, Kyle W.K. Mooney, and Daralyn J. Durie, the MoFo team obtained full summary judgment of noninfringement after years of litigation narrowed the case to a limited number of patents. After winning successive dismissal motions, Zoom moved to dismiss the entire case with prejudice. The Court issued a tentative ruling indicating that it was inclined to grant the motion, and the case promptly resolved.</li><li>As lead counsel for the country’s largest integrated healthcare system, Tim secured a complete summary judgment victory in a $900M+ trade secret case involving wearable medical device technologies, earning him Litigator of the Week runner up honors in The American Lawyer.</li><li>A complete defense verdict in a competitor patent trial involving USB technology that powers Apple CarPlay. Kyle Mooney is a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group, focusing on patent litigation and other intellectual property disputes, including trade secret, copyright, and trademark disputes.Kyle represents clients in a wide variety of fields, including communications and networking, audio/video content streaming and recording, network security, electronic trading, fiber optics, semiconductors, LEDs, optical storage and scanning, display technologies, digital cameras, software, automotive components, and medical devices. He has litigated significant IP disputes between direct competitors, as well as patent infringement actions brought by non-practicing entities. Kyle’s IP practice has included jury trials, bench trials, ITC proceedings, PTAB proceedings, and mediations.Kyle also has substantial pro bono experience, including arguments before the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and New York Appellate Division in habeas and criminal appeals, and a bench trial in the Southern District of New York in a case involving the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act.Kyle received his J.D. from New York University School of Law, where he was a staff editor of the Environmental Law Journal.

Daralyn Durie is among the top trial lawyers in the country, acting as go-to trial counsel for both plaintiffs and defendants. Daralyn’s exceptional track record has earned her consistent recognition from leading national publications. Chambers has listed her among the top 10 intellectual property lawyers in the U.S. and Law360 has recognized her as an “Icon of IP” and an MVP. Benchmark Litigation reported that “going against her was like going against a boxer in which you know you’re going to get hurt.” She’s a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and an inductee into the California Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame.Daralyn’s legal career began at Berkeley Law, followed by a clerkship for the Honorable Douglas Ginsburg on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. John is a trial attorney in the IP Litigation practice. His practice focuses on patent, trade secret, and copyright litigation.John has represented clients ranging from startups to large multinational companies in intellectual property litigation. He has litigated patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and complex commercial claims in federal and state courts, in private arbitration, and before the U.S. International Trade Commission and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His matters have involved a broad range of technologies, including semiconductors, touch screens, network security, media systems, and live therapeutics.John has also clerked in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.Before becoming an attorney, John was an aerospace engineer at NASA and then Space Systems/Loral. While in law school, John interned in the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and at the FCC and was the senior articles editor for the Georgetown Law Technology Journal.

Joyce Li is a trial lawyer with an emphasis on intellectual property. Her practice spans patent, trade secret, copyright, and complex commercial matters. She has represented clients in disputes involving technologies such as semiconductors, web applications, video streaming, electrochemistry, and biotechnology. Joyce quickly develops a command of the underlying technology to guide her clients to efficient and favorable resolutions. Joyce also believes in the power of a good story: whether before a judge or a jury, the strongest arguments are driven by a coherent, human narrative. She brings that perspective to every matter. Joyce has secured significant wins for clients on both sides of the “v.” On the defense side, she has played an integral part in obtaining wins on motions to dismiss, summary judgment, and at trial. Two recent examples are a win on the pleadings in a business‑critical patent case where Joyce argued the motion to dismiss, and a summary judgment win in a nine-figure trade secret case, where Joyce deposed the plaintiff’s technical expert and handled the summary judgment briefing. On the offensive side, Joyce has pursued claims of patent infringement for numerous clients, including through a successful jury verdict at trial.Joyce has experience in all stages of litigation. She has done trials in venues across the country, with matters ranging from complex commercial to patent to trade secret. Her trial roles have included delivering opening statements and examining both fact and expert witnesses. Joyce also has a robust pre-litigation and early litigation practice. In numerous cases, she has dived into the technical merits early and leveraged that analysis to cause the plaintiff to voluntarily dismiss its claims without payment—and before her client incurred significant litigation expenses. She has achieved similar results in pre­litigation matters, helping clients reach favorable resolutions before any lawsuit is filed.Prior to joining Morrison Foerster, Joyce clerked for the Honorable Richard G. Andrews in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.Joyce received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where she served as an editor of the California Law Review and a senior editor of the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.
