U.S. Aims to Thwart Ransomware Attacks by Cracking Down on Crypto Payments

Brandon Van Grack was quoted in the Washington Post’s article “U.S. aims to thwart ransomware attacks by cracking down on crypto payments.” The co-chair of Morrison & Foerster’s National Security and Global Risk + Crisis Management practices commented on the plans by the Biden administration and Treasury Department “to sanction financial exchanges that facilitate delivery of illicit digital payments to hackers.”

Brandon lauded the step Friday on Twitter, calling it the administration’s “first major proactive step” to stem ransomware attacks. “The sanctions could significantly impair the ability to make payments and further complicate the decisionmaking calculus for companies,” he tweeted.
