Brandon Van Grack spoke to Global Investigations Review about the challenges lawyers are facing as the rise of cryptocurrency has made it more difficult to navigate U.S. sanctions.
According to Brandon, the issue of cryptocurrency potentially undermining sanctions is part of a much larger national security and economic picture. “If people stop relying on U.S. currency, beyond just sanctions, there are countless other aspects of the U.S. economy and national security that would be upended if digital currency reigns supreme,” he said.
The risks extend to ransomware attacks, Brandon said, adding that in addition to all of the other really difficult decisions that have to be made following a ransomware attack, violating sanctions is now another factor piling on the pressure.
