Alex van der Wolk spoke to Global Data Review about recent activity by the Belgian data protection authority that has recently settled cases with two companies over cookie infringements.
“On the one hand, it’s encouraging in the sense that they are willing to entertain outcomes of investigations that do not lead to a full investigation, a full finding and therefore a full penalty, [and] the settlement amounts are quite less than the penalty amounts in comparable cases. On the other hand, I don’t think this is necessarily an indication that all cookie matters going forward will be dealt with in this manner. They do open up the door, and it’s very possible that other cases might face a similar settlement approach.”
