Joyce Liou and Joe Gratz spoke to World Trademark Review about the combination of Morrison Foerster and California-based litigation boutique Durie Tangri (DT) at the start of the year, discussing the motivations behind the decision to come together, the process of integrating their respective practices, and how this will serve to both strengthen and expand the firm’s existing offering to clients.
“DT built one of the United States’ premier trial practices, representing clients in diverse areas of complex litigation, including trademark, copyright and patent litigation,” Joyce said. “Its practice strengths and sector focus across technology and life sciences aligned perfectly with ours. MoFo knows tech and life sciences inside and out – we work for virtually all the biggest technology companies in the world (including four out of five of the largest global tech companies by market capitalization) and nearly half of the top 20 life sciences companies globally. Beyond client work, our new colleagues are also a good fit for MoFo culturally. It was instantly clear that we share the same values and commitment to diversity and inclusion, making them a match on all levels.”
Joe added: “Agreed, [from the DT end] we spent the last decade expanding our client base and capabilities. Our move to MoFo was a natural evolution of the firm. Both firms have deep roots in the San Francisco Bay Area. As Joyce also noted, we share a focus in the tech and life sciences sectors, so we know the fields and have known each other as key players in this space for some time.”
