Brian Sylvester spoke with InsideHealthPolicy about the potential role of federal preemption in the FDA’s proposed overhaul of the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) framework. Brian said food companies would prefer a uniform federal approach if policymakers move toward mandatory notification requirements. “It won’t be practical for companies to have to navigate five, a dozen, or more different requirements,” Brian commented. He added that industry would be open to considering alternatives that avoid a patchwork of state regulations, while emphasizing that multiple potential regulatory frameworks could be considered with the FDA.
