2021 ChinaBio Partnering Forum: Global Outlook on the Data Privacy Landscape and Human Genetic Resources Trends

12 May 2021 - 14 May 2021

As China has enacted the Biosecurity Law that criminalize human genetic resources violations, the U.S. is scheduled to propose significant changes to the HIPAA Privacy Rule, and the EU has firmed up its protection of health, medical and genetic personal data, data-driven business models and data privacy practices will likely be impacted by stricter rules in 2021. How to manage risks and adjust to the changing dynamics is critical for businesses seeking international collaborations and cross-border activities.

Moderated by Morrison & Foerster partner Janet Xiao, Head of the firm’s China Life Sciences Group, this panel will discuss the key data privacy trends in 2021. Partner Chuan Sun, highly recognized for his technology transaction practice, will dive into the newly promulgated China Biosecurity Law, in particular the strengthened rules on human genetic resources. Partner Alex van der Wolk and Of Counsel Melissa Crespo, both seasoned data privacy lawyers, will analyse the new regulations and enforcement from the perspectives of the EU and U.S. Partner Matthew Karlyn, with 23 years of experience in the healthcare and technology industries, will share his real-world experience in how to address challenging data privacy issues in cross-border transactions.
