National Law Journal Recognizes David Newman as a Washington, D.C. Trailblazer
The National Law Journal has recognized partner David Newman as a Washington, D.C. Trailblazer. The inaugural award identifies professionals who have moved the needle within the legal industry, making significant marks on the practice, policy and technological advancements in their sector.
David has built a distinct, well-respected practice in white-collar, cybersecurity, and crisis management. He co-founded the Firm’s Global Risk + Crisis Management Practice, drawing upon his experience as a senior White House and DOJ attorney. During his time in government, David was centrally involved in responses to crises as varied as major terrorism incidents, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, and the most deadly Ebola outbreak in history. In private practice, he was named one of the top “40 under 40” figures in the data law bar by Global Data Review.
These varied experiences positioned David to take leadership of MoFo’s COVID-19 response. In February, weeks before the advent of stay-at-home orders in the U.S., David spearheaded the creation of a COVID-19 task force to assist clients worldwide. Leveraging his leadership during the White House’s Ebola response in 2014, David was critical in preemptively identifying a firm-wide inter-disciplinary team and oversaw the creation of an extensive resource center devoted to these issues.
This early leadership prompted MoFo to have one of the first such task forces of any major U.S law firm and establish itself as a key thought leader in this space. In early March, David headlined the ABA’s first COVID-19 webinar and his commentary has been featured in CNBC, Bloomberg, Corporate Counsel, and Ethisphere. To date, this task force has advised clients in responding to over 200 engagements, from some of the largest companies in the world to small, non-profits focused on poverty alleviation, environmental advocacy, and LGBTQ youth support.
Along with managing the direction and operation of the task force, David has led or overseen COVID-related matters for organizations of all sizes and industries ranging from large Firm clients to pro bono representations, all while maintaining an active practice of government-facing investigations and cybersecurity counseling.
