Lisa Phelan spoke to GCR about the U.S. Department of Justice planning to seek more severe sentences for companies and individuals who intentionally misuse artificial intelligence (AI) tools to increase the harm caused by a crime.
Lisa said the agency sees the risks that the combination of AI, pricing and software tools potentially pose to facilitating crimes because the new technology enables real-time communication about market conditions without direct human interaction.
“In the antitrust space, enforcers see the risk of price collusion being not only easier but harder to detect, without the phone calls, text and emails previously required to coordinate with competitors,” she said.
