Jonathan Wheeler is Co-Managing Partner of the London office. Mr. Wheeler specialises in complex cross-border disputes. He has conducted court proceedings, arbitrations, and mediations on behalf of many international clients. His expertise includes general commercial disputes, international fraud and asset tracing, investigations, international trust litigation, and contentious insolvency.
Mr. Wheeler has worked on a number of high-profile cases.
He is acting for the liquidators of the Cayman Islands company Saad Investments Company Limited, dealing with global banking disputes and other issues worth USD $9 billion.
He is also currently acting for a large mining company in a USD $130 million dispute concerning an iron ore mine in Sierra Leone.
He recently acted for the beneficiaries of a Nevis law trust with assets of USD $400 million, obtaining the removal of the trustee and protector, obtaining interlocutory orders freezing the trust assets worldwide, obtaining the disclosure of documents and information from the trustee and protector.
He acted for a Jersey trust company in a claim arising out of a large fraud, against a number of defendants worldwide, including in the Cayman Islands, the United States, Switzerland, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
He acted in the USD $800 million Grupo Torras action for a member of the Kuwaiti royal family in defense of trust assets in the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Jersey, and Switzerland; for a trader in a complex hedge fund dispute in Jersey and Anguilla; and for the liquidators of TPL (Trading Partners Limited) arising out of the collapse of the Versailles Group.
Mr. Wheeler has also acted for all of the major music (and other entertainment) companies, in particular in retail and wholesale administrations, recovering their retention of title property.
Chambers UK 2013 recognised Jonathan as a leading lawyer in the field and noted his “great ability to think laterally” and “his strategic nous”; Chambers UK 2014 noted that “sources admire his intellect”. Chambers UK 2015 notes “He is very good at judging the tactics in litigation, good at figuring out what will work strategically, and he’s also personable and charming, which is helpful”.
