Brandon Van Grack spoke to Law360 about Task Force KleptoCapture, the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) task force of more than a dozen attorneys to enforce the raft of sanctions, export controls, and other economic countermeasures deployed by the U.S. and its allies.
According to Brandon, the government rarely enforces fresh sanctions so swiftly.
“This sends a really strong signal, because usually there’s an adjustment period, a wind-down period, some recognition that there can be uncertainty,” Brandon said. “Here, the DOJ is indicating they view these sanctions as such critical national security priorities that they will immediately begin enforcing them.”
He added: “It’s a recognition that this is no longer just about enforcing U.S. sanctions. It’s about furthering national security and foreign policy goals using whatever tools the government has.”
